Kat Parra & Her Latin Jazz Dance Band The Stage Dor opens to the public with another evening of live music and Dance. Kat Parra take the stage with her hot Latin band to get the salsa moving. Parra has leapt beyond the boundaries of the typical Latin jazz singer. With her thirst for the exploration of world rhythms and tonalities, she has developed a style of music that encompasses sounds that both transcend and bend the stereotypical definition of Latin jazz. She has incorporated not only Afro-Cuban music, but also added Afro-Peruvian, middle eastern, South American folklore as well as Nueva Trova. Most interestingly, she has also been developing, along with her musical director Murray Low, new arrangements of Sephardic music–the music of the Spanish Jews sung in the dying language of Ladino. Jenna is a remarkable |
Jenna Mammina A picture may paint a thousand words, but a word can tell the whole story. “Exquisite!” says author/radio host Ben Fong-Torres, former senior editor of Rolling Stone Magazine and perennial king of what’s hot and what’s not. He’s talking about pop/jazz vocalist/songwriter Jenna Mammina and he is not alone. Hailing from Michigan, home to luminary vocal legends like Aretha Franklin, Betty Carter, and her mentor, Abbey Lincoln, Jenna’s mixed heritage household and neighborhood surrounded her with a vast array of diverse culture and music. Her parents, Ben and Grace, both accomplished musicians in their own right, nurtured all four siblings to cultivate their own breed of musical talent, culminating in the creation of their own independent record label Mamma Grace Records. $20 advance $25 @ Door To buy tickets

Calvin Keys Trio featuring Dima on Vocals In this musical world there’s a lot of powerful forces, at some point in time they’re bound to come together and when they do, there’s a musical explosion. Jazz guitar legend Calvin Keys joins vocalist Dima for an intimate evening of jazz standards. Dima’s rich melodic tone and honest delivery of the lyric, blended with Calvin’s lean, single note style creates an innovative and heartfelt listening experience "As already acclaimed as one of contemporary jazz's finest guitarist, Keys here shows what makes him rise above the crowd: it's a feel for his instrument and his approach to the tunes before him. He works his guitar not only as a guitar, but as a total instrument like, say, a piano, one that can offer various hues and tones without limitations." "With his lean single-note style, veteran jazz guitarist Calvin Keys is a subtle but forceful improviser...Keys Trio has developed into a cohesive unit capable of generating a fierce sense of swing." One of our all time favourite singers and human being. |
Caren Armstrong "Award winning Singer/Songwriter Caren Armstrong is a mighty force in a petite package. At barely 5'2" she is a living testament to the art of Self-Expression. Skillfully combining dynamic, multi-colored vocals and a highly accomplished guitar style with intelligent, at times hysterical lyrics, Caren dusts off the term 'singer/songwriter' with a polish revealing delightful wit, great chops and a convincing passion for how she feels about the world." -Bob Stane Coffee Gallery Backstage, Pasadena CA “On Everything, Caren Armstrong delivers just about what the title promises: everything. Fine songs, fine arrangements and singing good enough to rivet you in place…” -Michael Scott Cain Rambles E-Zine, December 2007 |
